a weird love.

A few years ago, my brother was visiting from out of town, and he came with me to a Christmas party at a friend’s place.  I remember him saying after that party… “that was the strangest mix of people.”   He thought it was weird that these random people — some trendy, some not-so, some smart, some fun, some nerdy — all sat in the same room and enjoyed being with each other.  My response that day is connected to something I’ve noticed more recently… how Christianity brings about a weird love, a love that seems a bit unnatural.

And I suppose I have to say this isn’t always the case.  Some Christians tend to favor exclusivity, or they fear the movement toward that word “acceptance” is a risky dilution of their faith.   I honestly don’t want to figure out why that happens.

I do want to figure out how this “weird love” happens, because I love being a part of it.  And I think it runs a lot deeper than acceptance.
