How to end a novel.

The Giver was both the first book I read in one sitting and the first book I fell in love with.

Prior to reading this book, I was an avid “Sweet Valley High” reader, which I suppose wasn’t the worst thing in the world, since it got me to read a lot of books…  But one thing that bothers me about those books, as with many other young adult books (including Harry Potter!), is how the ending wraps everything up in a neat little package and leaves nothing to the imagination.  The Giver was the first book I read that did the opposite, and it triggered something in me that hadn’t been tapped into before…. my longing to imagine.

A book that leaves you with loose ends is a book that stays with you.  You’re finished reading, but you’re still asking questions, still mapping out different futures for the characters you love.

If you love this book, here is an awesome speech from Lois Lowry about how she came about writing The Giver, and she even tells you who is pictured on the cover…  click here to read her speech.
